Barriers to Instruction

Barrier

Solution

Technology

Physical Limitations

Make sure the theater is APA compliant. All sets and stage areas have space for movement. The classroom is arranged to accommodate an open floor plan.

Utilizing mapping software, students who can’t physically be in person can complete projects and exercises. Software such as Mapitude or Vectorworks

Attention or Concentration Issues

Utilize gamification techniques to provide a way to break up lessons to allow students to engage in the material in smaller chunks. Have Xbox-style achievements set up for benchmarks?

Create gamer profiles using Centrical.com so the student can track their progress and see their achievements. Mindspace is another gamification tool that can be utilized.

Visual or Language issues

Multiple forms of decimating the information will be utilized—text to speech, close captioning, and descriptive video services.

Provide tools that have an instant close caption. Use descriptive video and rollover descriptions in all modules. Using coding provides object, action, and context descriptions embedded in images utilized. Speechify and Dragon Diction assist with these issues

Social Issues and peer engagement anxiety.

Alternate forms of communication are offered to provide learners with an easier way to engage with peers.

Communications apps built within the LMS or apps like Hotseat or Kahoot could provide ways for more engagement.
