AECT STANDARD 2
Game Design Document
Context & conditions: A Game Design Document was created for Dr. Tang's Design and Evaluation of Games and Simulations in October of 2021, as a part of the M.Ed program at the University of South Carolina.
Scope:This artifact reflects the understanding of Gaming theory in design and an example of the type of creativity that can be utilized in an instructional design. Role: I served as the loan designer on this project. Instructional Design:The document serves as an example of an ADDIE Design. Knapp (2012) pointed out that games are generally from an Addie design. First, a game designer must analyze if his game will meet a specific audience. They must then design the game with certain goals in mind. Next, they must develop the game. Finally, they must launch the game for their target audience. Then they must evaluate if the game is doing what it set out to do and make adjustments if there are issues. To this end, a traditional game and an educational game are much the same and use the ADDIE approach. Related performance indicator(s):The idea of creating a game to fulfill an education need is an indicator of creating from the AECT 2 standard. This also points out the use of technologies to improve learning and performance outcomes. Reflection: The idea of creating a game to fulfill an education need is an indicator of creating from the AECT standard. This also points out the use of technologies to improve learning and performance outcomes. Creating a game from the ground up was something I was excited about. This artifact demonstrates my grasp of gaming theory as it applies to instructional design and my desire to try and fit the design to the learner and not the other way around. Gaming in education is something that this course made me more passionate about and something that I will invest more effort into in the future. |

Job AidContext & conditions: This job aid was created for Dr. Grant's Research Seminar in Educational Technology in May of 2021 as a part of the M.Ed program at the University of South Carolina.
Scope:This job aid was created to help novice researchers understand how to develop a survey. Role: I served as the loan designer on this project. Instructional Design:The creation of this job aid follows the MRK Instructional Design Model. I created a job aid by assessing the instructional problem, understanding who the learners were, and what task and learning objectives were needed to achieve. Besides being an assignment, it demonstrates that, as Morrison et al. (2013) explain, not every instructional problem ends in a learning design. In this case, a job aid poster would serve the need. Related performance indicator(s):By creating the job aid using technology, in this case, Canva and Adobe Acrobat, this artifact demonstrates ACET Standard 2, content pedagogy. Reflection: Having an arts background gave me an advantage I feel in this design. Knowing what look aesthetically pleasing, and eye catching made me feel more in tune with what information I needed to convey. While designing this job aid, I felt as though I truly understood the nuance of instructional design that those who haven't studied the field may not get. Sometimes, less is more. |
